Transform State Government – Rethink, Revitalize and Reform
Jason will work to transform state government, its policies and its processes by making it more innovative, more efficient, more productive and more valuable to the people of Vermont.
Under his leadership, the Secretary of State’s office will measure productivity based on real results, not spending. He will reduce, in every way possible, the use of tax dollars; and maximize, in every way possible, the value of each dollar that is invested to ensure that taxpayers are getting the best possible return on their investment.
As Secretary of State, Jason will also work closely with other statewide officers, and the Legislature, to advance these proven principles—and this bold vision for more entrepreneurial public management—all throughout state government.
Simplify Regulation and Revitalize the Business Registration Process
Jason knows employers, particularly small business owners, are the cornerstone of Vermont’s economy. They are the innovators that grow our economy, create jobs and propel our state forward. As Secretary of State, he will work to support the survival, revival and resurgence of business in Vermont by simplifying the registration and licensing process, reducing the regulatory burden and eliminating frustrating, and unnecessary bureaucratic, paperwork and procedures.
Empower Local Government
Jason understands that local government is the most valuable and accountable government. As Secretary of State, Jason will:
- Improve Communication with Municipal Officials;
- Support Local Authority;
- Advocate for More Flexibility for Local Government;
- Reverse the Effort to Centralize Core Local Functions (like land records);
- Oppose Unfunded Mandates; Same Day Voter Registration; and IRV; and
- Work with VMCTA to Ensure the Security and Integrity of our Elections.
Fight for Truth in Budgeting
Vermonters want truth in budgeting, not gimmicks or unrealistic forecasts. And transforming the culture of government—and maximizing productivity and value—requires absolute budgetary transparency. As Secretary of State, Jason will make all of the office’s budget information available online, in real time, and will advance legislation requiring all departments to do the same. Departments will be precluded from keeping any financial record that is not immediately available to taxpayers online.
Advance Real Campaign Finance Reform
Real reform of campaign finance requires real transparency. Jason will lead the effort to provide voters with accurate, real-time, online campaign finance information. And Jason will oppose any campaign finance legislation that erodes the right of free political speech protected by the First Amendment.
