Real Results
Over the last 8 years, Jason has served the people of Vermont, Governor Jim Douglas and the Republican Party in a variety of capacities. He has proven his ability to produce real results in a wide range of responsibilities. He is a Vermonter who believes in leadership by example.
Most recently, Jason was able to demonstrate how, through the application of fiscally conservative principles, government can, in fact, produce better results, while spending less taxpayer money.
As Commissioner of Forests, Parks and Recreation, Jason advanced a bold vision for how state government can provide better service—and better results—while spending fewer tax dollars. And this positive vision—combined with energy, enthusiasm, and expertise—is leadership that works.
Under Jason’s leadership, his department reduced taxpayer financed General Fund spending by nearly 30% and adopted a creative entrepreneurial approach to the way it does business.
The bottom line results speak for themselves. In just 18 months, among other things, he achieved:
- $2 million in savings to taxpayers;
- 28% increase in timber harvests (conducted by private loggers);
- Streamlining of processes and services;
- 10% increase in park visits and the corresponding local economic activity;
- A record setting $8.1 million investment in our state park system (creating hundreds of private sector construction jobs);
- Formation of the Parks Conservation Corps – a work training program for young Vermonters at risk of incarceration;
- Creation of a “Charter Unit” – A more entrepreneurial approach to public management that inspired reform of bureaucratic processes that had previously stifled innovation and limited productivity;
- And, Jason has put the entire park system on a path to eliminate its reliance on taxpayers all together.
In just 18 months, Jason succeeded in making his department among the most efficient, most productive and most valuable in state government. Proof positive that, with the right leadership, fiscal conservatism produces better results!
